Syllabus for The Church

(Ecclesiology - Church History – History of Christian Doctrine)

Taught at Servants Bible School, Vancouver, WA September 9 to November 21, 2013

This course is designed to give the knowledge, skills and resources to prepare one to be a competent student and well prepared teacher of the Bible.

 

Course content

The course will teach what the Bible says about the Church, how the Church, and its doctrine  have developed over the centuries.

 

Class schedule

The class will meet Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:00pm to 9:00pm - beginning September 9 and concluding November 21, 2013 – with breaks on Thursday, October 3rd & Thursday, October 31st.

 

Student objectives

  • Read Church History in Plain Language by Bruce Shelley compiling a chapter by chapter set of questions (at least 5 from each chapter - with answers and page numbers written down and brought to class). Be prepared to take your turns sharing your questions and leading the class discussions for the sessions when we are covering Church History.

 

  • Read The History of Christian Doctrine - by Louis Berkhof compiling a chapter by chapter set of questions (at least 5 from each chapter - with answers and page numbers written down and brought to class). Be prepared to take your turns sharing your questions and leading the class discussions for the sessions when we are covering the history of Christian Doctrine.
  • Read chapters from selected books (provided) for our sessions on Ecclesiology and be prepared to give a chapter report to the class and turn in a written copy.
  • There will be take home exams at each break & at the end of the class covering the sessions up to that break.

 

  • Memorize, in KJV, NKJV, NASB, NIV or ESV.

These are to be recited word perfect to three people.

  • At points during the class other assignments may be given as deemed beneficial by the instructor.
  • Chronological & Background Charts of Church History - Robert Walton is a bonus resource that we may use from time to time & you will certainly use in the future.

Grading

  • The 3 Tests are 40% of your grade
  • The Reading Assignments and Questions are 25% of your grade
  • The Scripture Memory Work is 10% of your grade
  • Class participation & presentations are 25% of your grade

Grades are as follows:        A = 90 to 100

B = 80 to 89

C = 70 to 79

D = 60 to 69
